CD REVIEW
Resin

The full length CD Resin begins with an appropriate introduction
to the primal energy evident
throughout this recording. Vocalist Matt Bryant’s creative
phrasing seems to inspire the
band’s powerful edge in “Brainstorm”. However, it is
Rory Crott’s blistering guitar solos
that truly prove to be the ultimate weapon of Spiral
Maddness. Bryant sings ‘Sueeeee’,
and Spiral Maddness responds with a funkified rhythm,
punctuated with tight rapid-fire
patterns on “Pig”. I like the way the guitar and vocal
dialog play with one another on the
third cut titled “Un”. Crott’s guitar work is best when
he pushes the envelope, forcing the
band to follow close with punctuated accents and drum
fills. Three minutes into the song,
I thought I felt a change in the rhythm, as Bryant’s
vocals sliced against the music’s grain.
But the band cohesively turned on a dime, then changed
gear, propelling the song into a
more powerful rhythm than before. It made me realize,
they knew exactly what they were
doing, and where they were going all the time. Very tight!
The fourth cut was “1 – 2 – 3”.
Rory Crott drifted effortlessly, playing both rhythm
and lead guitar roles, sending this song
through a series of musical changes. “Summertime Brik”
is a showcase for outstanding
guitar effects, as tempo alterations take Spiral Maddness
into an interesting direction.
“Corkscrew” follows with imaginative playing, unexpected
stops, a well-rehearsed rhythm
section, and burning guitar licks making this one of
my favorite cuts on the album. An aural
freight train of power is felt in “Freezer Burn”, featuring
the rapid-fire lyrics of Matt Bryant.
If this much energy is captured by Spiral Maddness in
a studio recording, I can’t imagine
their power-potential in a live performance. A change
of pace is felt as the band begins
Resin’s final selection, but hold on, because “Flourine”
takes you on a 7 minute 20 second
musical journey fueled by the power trio behind the vocalist.
While listening to the CD,
I actually found myself getting lost in the cover and
the creative artistry of the album’s
artwork. I wish they included the lyrics to the songs
in the liner notes, because I couldn’t
catch all the words to the songs. I hope Spiral Maddness
will be kind enough to post the
lyrics on their web site. Resin by Spiral Maddness is
a welcome addition to my musical library.
